Match Report: U18 18/01/25

Birmingham Youth Sports AcademyU18 2 - 4 Leamington Lions U18

POM: Chloe S

Willow 4', Holly 48'/55'/78'

It's been a while since our U18s got to play a game, and having not played since the end of November, the start was typically slow. It was hard for the team to get into a rhythm. Add in a very heavy pitch, and it was going to be a long Saturday morning.

Quickly though, our midfield did an excellent job of working the ball out wide. With a great pass down the line to the edge of the box, Willow was able to get in and finish with a fantastic shot.

Play went end to end, and both teams struggled to assert any dominance. Our lead was pulled back when Birmingham pounced on a stray clearance and made it 1-1. It went this way for the remainder of the half, despite valiant efforts on goal and a building sense of pressure from the Lions. Without our two first-choice strikers, it was an opportunity for other players to step up and for our midfield to weigh in with goals. Stout defending and good organization from our opponents meant that the first half ended 1-1.

In the second half, we switched things around and went a bit old school. Moving Holly into striker and playing a longer ball forward meant she was able to use the better parts of the pitch. Her great touch and composure saw us go ahead soon after the restart.

The pressure then went with the Lions for the remainder of the half. The girls dug deep, battled well, and their desire to win and keep the ball was immense. Holly quickly weighed in with another goal, and then the momentum was really with us. Adding her third and completing her first hat-trick for the club, Holly really helped us change the game. Unfortunately, a late goal from our opponents came when their striker went through with a classy finish, and we ended 4-2 to the Lions.

Chloe Smithers was our player of the match- moving positions a number of times through the game to cover substitutions and injuries she was calm and controlled when on the ball and battled constantly throughput. Playing through balls for our forwards on several occasions, she was a solid player very deserving of her POTM award.

Jamie's super large tactic board went another game unbeaten- Its now 6 games unbeaten when the super large tactic board comes along! Great to be playing again after having missed so many games due to weather cancellations, and a good start to the New Year for the girls with a win!
