Match Report: U13 18/01/25

COVENTRY SPHINX U13 1 - 1 LEAMINGTON LIONS U13

POM: Emeli

Mia, Jane (A)

First game since the 30th November and straight in playing the top of the league who have won all their matches so far this season! (No pressure!)

As expected, the intensity was high, last time we played Sphinx they scored within the first minute so the Lions knew they had to be switched on from the start.

The game was end to end, keeping our defence and Amber busy! 10 minutes in we won a corner, great kick taken by Jane saw it come out for Mia to score. Mia was clearly thirsty for more and a short while later ran from the 1/2 way line and had a shot on goal. Jane made some great runs and had some shots on goal, and we found ourselves on top the last 15 minutes of the first half.

Half time talk, lots of excited chatter and the girls refocused for the second half.

A game where we couldn’t afford to take our eye off the ball (pardon the pun) as we knew Sphinx would come out fighting.

Sphinx upped their intensity and came into the 2nd half clearly ready to take the game to us, the next 10 minutes were very busy in our box , our defence (orchestrated by Emeli )and Amber were battling hard and inevitably one of the fumbles round our goal saw the ball ricoshay off one of our girls and unfortunately ended up in the net to make the score 1-1.

Heads didn’t drop and the Lions kept on pressing with Jane having some good runs and shots on goal.

More end to end play with the final push from Sphinx in the last 5 minutes raining down on our goal. I’m sure the girls were all taking it in their stride (can’t help these puns!) but for the coaches and Parents it was extremely tense. Fittingly, Amber made a final save as the whistle blew for full time.

What a result! So proud of the effort levels from all the girls today, constantly battling, never giving up but a special mention to Emeli who was exceptional.
