This would be the Lions’ first ever match against GNP who before the game were just above in the league table. Previous results suggested that GNP are one of the top teams in the division and the game could have been tough.

On a very wet pitch leaning more towards sludge than grass, the game started with early pressure from GNP, but this was continuously soaked up by the Lion’s defence without really allowing any chances to score. After the initial pressure, the Lions started to create some chances and Jane was able to run down the left wing and swing in a dangerous cross which was intercepted by the GNP Goalkeeper. Both Mia and Ava had a run on goal ending with a heavy touch and the goalkeeper collecting.

This would be the general run of play for the rest of the first half with the Lions not allowing a single good chance for GNP to score. The chances mounted up at the other end and eventually the Lions were rewarded with a well worked goal. Jane took a throw in and received the ball back on the sideline. She made a good cross from the right wing and as GNP tried to clear, the ball came to Mia who shot high into the top of the goal. The GNP Goalkeeper got a hand to it, but in the wet conditions couldn’t stop the shot. 0-1. The Lions didn’t rest and quickly scored again before half time when Darcy collected the ball in midfield and played a perfectly weighted pass through the defence in to the path of Mia as she timed her forward run. This time Mia perfected her forward run to score her second goal. 0-2.

The second half started with GNP going for it. Again the confident and well organised Lions defence held firm, with GNP managing a dangerous chance which Amber, perfectly positioned, blocked with her legs.

GNP couldn’t keep the pressure up and Jane made a great run down the wing from a throw-in. She played an amazing high cross taking the GNP defenders out of the game. Amelia collected the ball in space and calmly fired into the top corner. 0-3. 2 minutes later Jane found space in a similar area at the edge of the box. With a similar high cross, which the GNP keeper couldn’t catch cleanly, she found Amelia in the box again who scored her second. 0-4.

The game continued with play mainly in the oppo’s half, the Lions demonstrating some excellent passing with Holly making important interceptions in front of the defence and Emeli controlling things fantastically at the back. As Emeli began to make runs forward to help the Lions create more goals (and keen to nab a goal on her birthday), GNP got an attack going and were able to score a consolation goal. 1-4

The Lions kept working hard in the last part of the match and were rewarded with 2 more goals for Amelia. The game ended 1-6 and the Lions deserved the convincing win in difficult conditions, 100% effort from all the girls, the team continues to improve and develop together which is fantastic to see.
