SoccerRockz U11 Starz 9-0 Leamington Lions U12JW
POM: Imogen
Half term matches are always a challenge for clubs due to lack of numbers, but due to sickness we were down to 8 players before we arrived in Kenilworth. The SoccerRockz coach was happy to play 8v8 but after a further no show, we were faced with playing the match with a player down. Undaunted, our remaining 7 Lions came up with a plan and prepared to do the best they could. They weren’t even phased by having to pay uphill for the first half!
The first half was unsurprisingly one way, and this wasn’t just because the ball was rolling down the hill towards our goal quite a lot. Bhavika, Scarlett and Imogen were going to be busy at the back and they certainly were. All credit to them, they stood up all game and tracked back and forth with the Rocks players as best they could, but the extra player was hard to suppress. Imogen, who doesn’t usually play in defence, did a super job all game to make tackles, clearances and keep her energy up. For this she was certainly deserving of Coach’s Boot this week. Perhaps she might want to play in defence again!
At half time we were 6-0 down and the girls had worked extremely hard to keep the scoreline to that. It certainly didn’t tell the full story of the half. The second half underway and we started to feel the benefit of playing downhill. We also saw some excellent teamwork where Amelia was coming back to help our defence manage the superior numbers of the opposition.
Eva, Theia and Amelia would play the half in midfield and produced some good runs between them. Trying to find a pass was challenging for them, and the very warm spring weather was starting to take its toll. Hats off to the girls today, for their sustained efforts in the face of adversity. The opposition and referee were both very generous in their praise. Thanks also to Marv and Alex for assisting the referee this week.
Final score 0 - 9
