A wonderful warm day to play thee beautiful game that is football and the Lions faced the Warwick Junior girls, who had won all of their previous 3 cup games. So a good team for sure.
The game started fast and within a couple of minutes a Lions corner caused issues in the box and an own goal put the girls 1-0 up. The girls continued to press and be the better side and after 14 minutes Sara scored a it’s a fantastic left foot shot from a great cross by Scarlett. This put the Lions 2-0 up. We continued to press and nearly scored a 3rd but for a last ditch touch by Warwick’s keeper. Warwick then started to get into their game and they had a few shots which were causing no real harm until a ball bobbled around and found itself with on of their girls unmarked at the back post and she steadied and scored to make it 2-1. That’s how it stayed until half time.
The second half was a lot more even as Warwick began to try runs past our girls they kept getting through but the defenders kept them at bay. The Lions began to tire as they no longer had any subs due to an unfortunate knee injury and the constant fresh legs of Warwick was beginning to give them the better of the game. Then midway through the second half a speculative effort from Warwick from the half way line caught us out Joss got a touch on it but the ball just wanted to go in even though she tried really hard to stop it going in. One of those goals that just catches everyone out and 9 times out of 10 would have gone way wide or over. This though seemed to help the Lions find a second wind and also their passing game, which Warwick could not live with and this opened them up again but we couldn’t score the winning goal.
All over a great result against an in form team, a result that sees us progress to the next round of the Spring Cup (Quarter Finals) in second place behind - yes you guessed it Warwick Juniors!
