Leamington Lions U10 0-4 stockton U10
Captain: Lila
PPOM: Anaya
A difficult game today where the score line didn't reflect the defensive and attacking efforts of the Lions over a tough 50 minutes.
From the first whistle the girls had to find effective tackles and clearances to stop the Stockton attacking play which created numerous goal scoring opportunities. Resolute defence by Isla, Jess & Alicia in goal for the first 15 mins kept the game at 0-0. Stockton's relentless pressure finally told and they scored two quick goals to make the score 2:0.
Great link play from Isla and Erin to get the ball into the Stockton half enabled several attacking opportunities for Elowen and Lila but the Stockton defense and goal keeper kept the Lions at bay . HT 0-2
The half time talk re-energised the team and the girls came out on fire with a strong attacking start. Erin and Lila had attempts well saved by the Stockton keeper and Lila deliver a great cross into the box to Elowen who's shot on target was saved by keeper.
The girls had to quickly reorganise for another period of Stockton attacking play with a fantastic save by Alicia and a second close shot which just went wide. Isla was instrumental in the strong defensive effort of the Lions goal when the direction of play quickly changed.
The counter attacks showed the resilience of the Lions in midfield to tackle and win possession with Anaya's confidence growing in winning the ball, playing a pass which started a Lions attack .
This was a game of throw ins, corners and counter attacks for the next 15mins with attempts on goals by both sides and end to end action .
A 3rd goal by Stockton with a good finish broke the Lions resilience with the opposition manager celebrating like he had won the World Cup final.
The Lions continued to battle and fend off opposition attacks with counter attacks of there own but they couldn't get that elusive 1st goal despite plenty of endeavour. A corner was whipped into the Lions box which was finished by a Stockton player to make it 0-4.
The girls showed determination to keep going and pushing forward to try and find a goal but couldn't test the keeper in the dying minutes of the game.
Parents player of the match went to Anaya whos confidence has really developed over the last few games, winning the ball in midfield and playing a pass to clear or find a teammate.
Special mention to Erin and Lila for there work rate in midfield and Isla for her strong defensive display clearing the dangerous attacks on numerous occasions. Well done to all the girls today as they gave everything.
Happy International women's day girls!
