Match Report: U10MR 22/02/25

Leamington Lions U10s 2 - 1 Daventry Town U10s

Captain: Alicia

GK: Alicia

Goals: Alex

PPOM: Jess

Such a welcome change to be at home and to have the sun shining on us! Lions started strong with a couple of early shots on goal by Alex and Elowen, which were saved by their keeper. Daventry responded with some attacking play, which resulted in their on target shot being saved by Alicia.

With a few of the team missing today, some of the Lions were out of position but they all rose to the challenge. Anaya worked hard in mid-field, making some good clearances and tackles. Lila on the right wing must have run at least 10km today, supporting the defenders as well as running with the ball up into the goal area. The Lions kept up the pressure; with great tackles from Jess in defence, Skye shoring up midfield and lots of shots on goal from Lila and Elowen, including one strike from Alex, which bounced off the post. Throughout this, the Daventry defence didn't let them score. Against the run of play, Daventry managed to get past our defence and score. 0-1 to Daventry at half time.

Lions came back with intensity after the second half whistle, with a quick succession of shots, all of which were saved by their goalkeeper. This intensity was rewarded after the ball was stolen by Imogen in defence, who passed onto Lila. Lila ran up the pitch and picked out Alex with a great cross, who equalised for the Lions! One all.

The next period of play was all pressure from the Lions. Any attacking play from Daventry was absorbed by the Lions and the ball was sent back up the field, with Anaya getting involved in mid-field and Skye growing in confidence with her tackles. There were a lot of opportunities for the Lions to score, which unfortunately they couldn't capitalise on. Finally, in a copy of the earlier goal, Lila took the ball from the defence up the pitch and passed off to Alex, who made it past two defenders and popped the ball past the goalkeeper: GOAL 2-1

Another shot by Alex from a long way out was on target but the Daventry goalkeeper made a great save. The response from Daventry was a last minute run up the pitch, but Imogen managed to thwart their run and stop them from scoring as the final whistle went.

It was a tense match, where Leamington Lions had most of the possession but weren't able to convert that into goals due to Daventry defence and some great saves from the Daventry keeper. The parents' player of the match went to Jess, who in just a week gained a lot of confidence in defence and was an integral part of the Lions' back line. Imogen and Lila both got special mentions for playing out of their usual positions and putting in 100% as ever.
