Match Report: U12JW 18/01/25

Leamington Lions U12JW 0 - 11 Diamond Academy U12

POM: Izzy

In my experience, diamonds have always tended to be fairly small. However, the Diamonds that turned up at Harbury Lane (30 minutes late for KO and finally at the right location) were the size that usually require a lot of security. It’s probably fair to say it took our Lions well into the second half to finally gather the confidence to push back, but when they did the Diamonds lost a lot of their sparkle.

On two occasions, their number 10, arguably the best player in their team, had to go off to regain compose after finding herself on the receiving end instead of the giving, as our Lions fought back and started to hold their ground. Jon and I were super proud to see the girls stand up to players twice their size in some cases.

While the score line undoubtedly demonstrates the mismatch between the two teams, it doesn’t do justice to how hard the girls played and how they didn’t give up. All the girls had their own moments in the (notably absent) sun. Amelia, Theia, Bee, Holly and Eva had good chances that they worked hard to create. Sophia and Eva had very good performances in goal. Another penalty saved for Eva. Lottie and Scarlet were busy at the back and didn’t let up all game.

But the real diamond in the rough today was Izzy. After taking a knock in the first half and not sure if she could carry on, Izzy was quick to gather herself and get back into the fray after the suggestion that she might want to play in goal. There followed excellent defensive decision making, multiple clearances off the line and marking the biggest the player out of the game for most of the second half. A truly well deserved Coaches Boot this week.

Big thanks to our volunteers again this week. Alex on the line, Jon for helping with the coaching, and Alex Elston for marshalling in the car park. All really appreciated. For the record, there are other things that are harder than diamond. Just ask Izzy.

Final score 0 - 11
