From Grassroots to Greatness: The Pathway for Girls in Football

Every footballing legend started somewhere. Not under the bright lights of Wembley, or with their name printed on the back of a stadium shirt, but in muddy boots, with oversized kits, on school fields, local parks, and makeshift pitches between goalposts made of jumpers. That’s the beauty of football. Whether you're playing in the Premier League or having a kickabout after school, every journey starts at grassroots level.
At Leamington Lions Girls Football Club, we know just how powerful those first steps can be. They’re not just the start of a sporting journey. They’re the beginning of confidence, teamwork, passion, and belief.

Big Dreams Start Small
Grassroots football is where it all begins. It’s where young players learn how to control a ball, pass to a teammate, and maybe even score their first goal. It’s also where they discover the joy of the game, find friends for life, and develop life skills that stretch far beyond the pitch.
Take Jess Carter, for example. She was born in Warwick and played locally in Leamington Spa. Just like the girls who pull on a Leamington Lions shirt today, she started with a love for the game and a dream. Fast forward, and Jess now plays for Chelsea Women and the England national team, representing her country at the very highest level - including the World Cup Final in 2023.
Her journey proves what we believe deeply at Leamington Lions: talent is everywhere, and with the right support and encouragement, girls can go all the way.

Real Role Models with Real Beginnings
Jess isn’t alone. Some of football’s biggest names had humble beginnings:
Lucy Bronze played with the boys at her local club in Northumberland before joining Sunderland’s academy. She’s now a multiple Champions League winner and England international.
Beth Mead grew up playing on the fields of Hinderwell, a small village in North Yorkshire. Today, she’s a Golden Boot winner and one of the most recognised forwards in the women’s game.
Even Lionel Messi, often called the greatest of all time, started his footballing journey at a local club in Argentina, coached by his dad and surrounded by family support.
Creating Pathways for Future Stars
At Leamington Lions, we’re proud to offer that same opportunity to girls of all ages. From our development squads to competitive teams, we’re not just building players, we’re building people.
We coach with care, we train with purpose, and most importantly, we keep the love of the game at the centre of everything we do.
Because whether a player dreams of playing for England, coaching a local team, or just enjoying football every Saturday morning, every journey matters.
Why Grassroots Matters Now More Than Ever
The visibility of women’s football is growing—and that’s exciting. But the real engine behind the game’s future is still happening here, in places like Leamington Spa. On our training pitches, in our matches, in our mini-lions who are just learning to dribble, and in our teenagers who are setting their sights on scholarships or semi-pro teams.
We’re here to nurture talent, build resilience, and support ambition.
So if your daughter is showing an interest in football - whether she’s kicking a ball around the garden or scoring hat-tricks at school - it might be time to think about taking that first step. Because greatness starts with just one kick, one pass, one goal.

Join the Pride
At Leamington Lions, we welcome girls of all abilities and backgrounds. Whether they’re taking their first steps in football or looking to progress further, we’re here to support every player’s journey.
From grassroots to greatness - the path is open. All it takes is a pair of boots and a love for the game.
If you would like to join the team, you can do so here.
